the Upriver project > future plans > business directory
Communities are not naturally strong - we have to make them strong.
It used to be that people lived and worked in their community and only ventured afar once or a few times a year for buying things they or the other community members could not make themselves or to visit with one of the few family members that had left the community.
Nowadays it is different: we live in one place, we work in another, we do our shopping in the internet or in places far away (such as Moncton), if we attend church services at all, it may be in yet another community, and our family members are scattered all over the country if not even all over the world. No wonder employers close their doors (ie more and more people have to commute daily or even weekly or monthly) and once well off Kent County becomes poorer all the time, our churches are desecrated, we talk to our neighbours less frequently, our communities become dead (in todays terminology) bedroom communities.
This can not be the desired effect of the progress of man and from an ecological point of view it is just as much nonsense as from an economical one.
We still have a lot of people living in our parishes of Harcourt and Weldford which can provide much of what is currently procurred outside of our area. In order that these neighbours of ours can continue to live and work in our midst, please consider buying from them before buying somewhere else.
In order to make this buying local more easy for everyone including the cottagers and newcomers in our midst, we are puttung together the Upriver Directory, for everyone to consult before spending money outside of our area and thus reducing employment and income opprtunities and polluting the environment.
In addition to this we will organise a country market to make one stop shopping possible in the country as well.
So be part of a movement that fosters sustainable living and a vibrant community! As a provider of services or vendor and or producer of goods be listed in the directory (it can be free of charge!) and as a consume (which is everyone of us) look at who is in the directory and give them a chance. It is in your interest and in everyone's who lives in our wonderful upriver area of the Richibucto River.
THANK YOU!
